Ott Wisdom
At March’s Collective meeting, Eric and Julie Ott, worship leaders at Northport Baptist Church, stopped by to tell us a few of the things God has taught them in worship ministry. Check out their advice to fellow worship leaders and join us for our next meeting!
Discernment on song selection
Discernment on song source
Discernment on the revealed word
Discernment on Song Selection
Popularity of a song does not determine its effectiveness in corporate worship
What is the song ABOUT? God and His character? Or me?
Would you sing this song standing in front of Jesus?
Discernment on Song Source
Music is powerful, but that does not mean we should give it a theological pass.
Consider the source: does a son'g author consistently point others to the revealed Jesus in word and deed?
Make the hard choice; seek what God wants you to do concerning a song you're unsure about.
Discernment on the Revealed Word
It's not ok for someone who barely knows God's word to lead God's people in worship of Him.
Do NOT water down the Gospel for the sake of being inoffensive.
Worship leaders ought to also be theological leaders.
True worship is not external, but internal
Your role does not matter, you can be a leader wherever you are.
“Worship is to treasure God above all things”- John Piper
John 4:24- this is the heart of worship
There’s a certain production involved in worship leading. But you can’t make God move; you can’t manufacture true worship.
You’re to do your very best, and to not do so is a distraction.
The consistency with which you seek God will determine the quality of your worship.
